Love of Place and History: A Contextual Approach to Understanding Entrepreneurship in Rural Regions

This study argues that rural entrepreneurship merits its own context and focus of investigation in the entrepreneurship literature. The paper develops a theoretical case for contextualizing the study of rural entrepreneurship, which remains understudied with respect to key assumptions about social networks, institutional impacts, and historical circumstances. The paper proposes an additional dimension to the theory of contextualization: separation of contexts should not be justified merely by differences in assumptions about independent variables, but also by differences in the outcome variables researchers measure. Drawing on purposeful interviews with three actors embedded in the Central Appalachian entrepreneurial ecosystem, the paper directionally illustrates how rural settings differ along four parameters: social networks, institutional impacts, historical contexts, and outcome measurements. The findings invite further work that treats rural entrepreneurship as a context of its own rather than a residual category defined against urban benchmarks.
